My copy of Cthulhu Wars arrived today. Since this is a huge and rather special release I figured I would document the unboxing. I backed at a rather high level so I will also have the expansions coming later in the year if anyone is interested in seeing those as well.

The corner is a little damaged but I don’t care about that. Look at those puny peasant games in the background.

So what is in the box?

A lot! Most of it seems really high quality, but what is really impressive is that Kickstarter backers should be receiving higher quality versions of a few of the thinner components later this year for free in addition to a bunch of free plastic models. On top of that, anyone who was willing to back at higher levels is getting some plastic components to swap out the cardboard with.

Detail on the larger models is pretty great.

They are also HUGE

Cthulhu now leads the Blood Ravens into an era of heresy!

Mine is in the mail. Unfortunately, I have a rare gaming night tonight and no opportunity to play with 3+ players in the near future after this evening.

I had my fingers crossed, but no luck.

I just got mine today as well.

I haven't even had a chance to open it yet. :icon_cry:

Only issue I had with mine was one of the Nightgaunts was bent over, head practically touching toes. A brief dip in some hot water convinced it to straighten the heck back up. :icon_wink:

I also backed at a level that gets me the first expansion and several other goodies, those they won't start working on until March from what I recall. So many expansions coming, sheesh.

The last I heard, the expansions are already in production or at least preproduction. One of the developers said that if everything goes as planned they expect them to ship out to backers around June-July. The reason they haven’t announced that officially is because last time, the manufacturer completely botched the release plan. I think one of their guys is going to actually BE in China in March, and will confirm the release date then.

Plus Chinese New Years and its two week vacation always screws things up in new and unusual ways.

Mine is in the house. Now to find time to play. I may have to make my daughter try a 2 player version, even though that's not the ideal way to play.

It wasn't packed great, and I guess a few of them have damaged components, but mine seems okay, apart from a little misshapeness on the sexy box. Even the Old Ones Storage tray is sexy on this thing. A really thick, smoky plastic. It'll be a shame to lose that when all the expansion stuff starts pouring in. Seriously, I don't know where I'm going to store it.

I know the expansions are still down the road a bit. Are the nice gates and 1st player markers coming with those? I kinda wish I at least had the gates at this point.

All the rest of the stuff should be coming in the next shipment, which won’t be till summer. I'm eager to get the custom dice and expansion since we usually have 5 people here instead of 4 on game nights. Right now it looks like my first game will be tomorrow.

Having now punched out all the pieces I was actually surprised how few components there are. My group of friends regularly play things like Eclipse and Caverna, which have hundreds of pieces. This actually looks like a fairly fast and easy to setup game.

I finished reading the instructions last night. Very simple ruleset. The complications come from the spellbooks and getting the spellbooks and knowing what your faction can do (to get the spellbooks). Still not complicated, but it is layered and a-symmetrical. However, it's going to make playing 2-player (2 factions each) a bit of a chore, I think.

I also picked up a copy! I'm working on a video review with an unboxing and everything. :)

The expansions from the first wave are finally shipping. Should be here in a week or two.

ALSO, if you like the base game, you might want to hurry up and do a Late Backer Signup here if you think you will ever want the expansions. This was a 2nd Kickstarter that just ended and they have been pretty upfront that because of the costs to produce, this might be your only chance to get the expansion content.

Some pictures of the new stuff!

This is MOST of the items from my CDG pledge. The cardboard box on the right is filled with the plastic grey gates and there are about a dozen more figures that are duplicates of monsters from the main factions, as well as little plastic stands to display them all in another box.
