Space Hulk

So, it's just speculation right now, but sites are reporting that GW's announcement on the 13th is a reprint of Space Hulk. I missed out last time and will be all over this.

Oooh, I'd get that too. I've got one of the really old editions, but I've taken it with me traveling (I was young, okay?) so the box and its components is all battered now. I actually looked for the previous reprint last year, but couldn't find it.

For somebody who's only really familiar with Games Workshop's Warhammer and 40K games, how is Space Hulk different? I understand it's more of a linear one-on-one experience, but are the basic mechanics the same as 40K?

Also, I read that it can be played single player? Is that a decent experience?

Space Hulk is nothing like the Warhammer games, though they share the same universe. Space Hulk is a tile-based corridor shooter with tight mechanics that are very specific to the scenario (Space Marines in Terminator armor boarding a massive Space Hulk and facing Genestealers). I wouldn't try to compare the two. This game is all about a small fire team dealing with small-scale tactical scenarios where even one character breaking formation or experiencing a weapons jam could turn the whole thing into a massacre. It's very tense and atmospheric.

I've tried that with the old version that I have. It works, but you have to be strict with how you play the Genestealers. Always move them towards the closest targets, and make the most tactically sound choices at all times. You don't automate the Genestealers, but their tactics are mostly pretty straightforward. You do lose out on some of the psychological aspects of having another player taunt you with radar blips just outside of reach, never knowing if they're just a malfunction in the scanners or a huge swarm of enemies. Any such malfunctions will simply appear at random when you play solo.

When I played against myself, I lost.

If you're looking for single player, just pickup the space hulk PC version that's out now, or wait for the massively updated Ascension version that adds more RPG-like features, instead of being exactly like the board game.

Or try the Space Hulk: Death Angel card game. It's a hell of a lot of fun single player.

+1 on the Space Hulk card game. It's really great

Yup, love me some Death Angel.

I have the 3rd edition of Space Hulk that was released years ago. Unfortunately, the damn tiles started warping almost minutes after I unpacked it. It's not unplayable, but it is certainly annoying.

Ah, but a card game gets rid of the fun of playing miniatures! ;)

Thanks for all the info, though.

You have cards as a stand in for the miniatures in Death Angel, but you could easily replace those cards with miniatures.

    Preordered! :)

Glad to see that this is a version with somewhat expanded rules over the old one I have. There's a librarian and a broodlord here, which I'm looking forward to seeing in action.

I'd like to say that Games Workshop is doing this on purpose to raise the perceived value of this game, but it's already a steal for what you get in the box. Glad I got my preorder in.

Actually, it looks like I was wrong. For anyone who is in the US, make sure to change your location in the top right. As of 9:30PM you can still buy. My pre-order is locked in.

I have my name on a 2nd copy at my FLGS that I'd be willing to buy and ship for anyone who missed out. I was just hedging my bets so I didn't miss the chance to buy

Somehow I also preordered one last weekend and got the shipping notice. I have no idea who I'll play it with, but I figured I might as well check it out. :retard:

Mine might have shipped faster but you still might get it before me. I chose the free shipping option and the delivery estimate is the 26th. Apparently they strapped the box to a turtle and it’s walking its way here from Tennessee.

Nah, it'll be the same with mine. Remember that mine will need to pass several country borders, and most delivery companies don't deliver to my city (despite it being Norway's third largest) and instead hand it over to the official postal company. My shipment should take 4-6 days, I expect. Once it's shipped.

Your copy is mine forever now! Miiine!

    :P

Anyway, let me know what you guys think of the game whenever you get it.

Just found out the package is shipping “smart post” for the rest of the trip.

For those that don’t know, this means they replace the good turtle with one that is really dumb, get it horribly drunk, then hit it in the head with a shovel a few times for good measure. After which they strap it to a catapult and launch it in your general vicinity. Results vary.

Mine is estimated to arrive on Thursday. Based on experience that is probably accurate, though it could end up being delayed to Friday.

Mine is on the truck for delivery today, so I should have a fun present to open when I get home.

Well, for the first time ever, Smart Post did not completely suck and my packaged arrived ahead of time.

The quality of the components is really impressive, and frankly, a little daunting. I’ve been painting the miniatures for some of my other games and have been very happy with the results but the difference in quality is really night and day.

One last thing, check the bottom of your shipping box before you throw it away. Mine had a poster print of the box cover, ready for framing/hanging.

Yeah, mine arrived last night and it is definitely a formidable box. I'll have to check for that poster print, i didn't see it on first unpacking.

I think I'll need to make a trip to the hobby shop this weekend or something to pick up some paints and other gear, it's been several years since I painted minis, but I think that could be a fun thing to get back into. At least in this limited aspect, heh.

Come join us in the miniatures painting thread at OO for some guidance, if you want to. Unless you're already there, because I can't recall everyone who's participated in that thread. :P

Cool, I'm checking that out now. I'm not sure I'll be confident enough to post any pictures of my horrible painting, but it's nice to have some inspiration and see other people going through the same re-learning process. :)

This all comes at kind of a bad time with the onslaught of fall games starting, it would have been a good indoor project for a slower time of year.

Well, I did manage to play my first game of Space Hulk this weekend. Neither of us had ever played before so there was quite a bit of rule checking but it still managed to be quite fun. I’m not sure if it’s $130 worth of fun but the individual components are the best I’ve ever seen in a board game so I really can’t complain too much.

I give it a moderate recommendation for the people who want to pick it up in 5 years when the next reprinting occurs. :icon_biggrin:
