Games similar to HeroQuest?

edited January 2014 in Tabletop Gaming
After doing my interview about the issues with HeroQuest 25th Anniversary, I found out that my in-laws played this when they were younger. I was wondering if there was a game similar to HeroQuest that I could introduce them to? I looked at what rules I could find, and it sounds like Descent would be one that works, and while not exactly the same, the D&D Adventure games might work as well. Any other suggestions?

I found Mice and Mystics scratched the same itch and has some great storytelling as well.

It's been so long since I've played Hero Quest, but I'd 2nd your idea that the D&D Adventure games might scratch the same itch. As well, gaming friends that I know that owned and liked HQ also seem to enjoy Mage Knight.

Descent 2nd Edition is good, like you said.

As mentioned earlier, Mice & Mystics is another good one that has a really good story built into it.

You could also look into the D&D titles (Legend of Drizzt, Castle Ravenloft and Wrath of Ashardalon).

Also, Betrayal at House on the Hill can be a lot of fun.

There are a lot of dungeon crawl games (Claustrophobia, Super Dungeon Explore, Dungeon Run, et al). Take a look at this list for some ideas.

Claustrophobia is really fun, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I think the D&D boardgames really are exactly what you're looking for.
