Bugbear's Next Car Game (aka Wreckfest)

edited February 2013 in Video Games
Bugbear, the makers of Flatout and Rally Trophy, have just announced their Next Car Game with a trailer and website. I sure hope that's not the real name, but it is real in-game footage of some demo derby action. :icon_biggrin:

It's just a teaser, but better than what most companies consider a teaser.

Please let this be something along the lines of Test Drive: EoD. With physics closer to Flatout than Rally Trophy.

I was also a big fan of Test Drive: Eve of Destruction, and would love an updated version of that style of game from Bugbear! They've said it is somewhat of a return to their FlatOut 1 roots, so I wouldn't expect anything much like Rally Trophy.

Well, I thought Rally Trophy was awful, so let's hope not. Would love some jump races, figure 8s, etc.

Huh, RT is one of the best rally games released - what's to hate about it? I thought it had some of the best physics in a rally game to date - IMO only CM Rally 2005 bested it in that department. I'll admit the complete twit co-pilot was bloddy annoying and cardboard-cutout like fans were ridiculous, but everything else about that game was more than decent.

I enjoyed FlatOut 1 and 2 every bit as much though, despite them being much more arcadish racers. And I'll 3rd TD EoD as a very fun game too. I loved the demo derbys in FlatOut 2, so I'll be more than happy if this plays like that.

I know there were people that liked RallyTrophy, but I'll take Richard Burns...or Mobil 1 for that matter. I have a heard time remembering which CMR was the best at this point...maybe 2.0? I found it impossible to drive in a straight line in RT going 30 mph on dry pavement. At that point, I was playing rally games a lot, and I felt like it was dramatically overtuned to where tings that were easy in real life were much too difficult.

I enjoyed Rally Trophy despite how fiddly the handling was, but considering that was Bugbear's first game and came out 12 years ago I'm not sure it has much bearing on their current physics and handling. I would love to see them revisit that concept with all the things they've improved and learned since then.

    Regardless...demo derby! :icon_biggrin:

Oh sweet Jebus, shut up and take my money!! And since they are now taking preorders, they have already done exactly that! (hot new video in the link, preorders with early access, my head asplode)

I honestly wish they had something between the $70 and $1000 tiers...I want to support this as much as I can but that's a bit of a jump, heh.

Being able to build and customize your cars was definitely something I didn't expect from this game but will be a very welcome addition. :)

From their forums, the wrecked cars in the background of the website are exactly how you will see it in game. 8|

This new video and preorder business inspired me to re-install the original FlatOut game this weekend and I'm surprised at how well it holds up, both in graphics and gameplay handling for a 9 year old game. It ended up sucking me in for several hours, and I may just have to go back for more.

I'm surprised so many people here loved Flatout. When I tried to get people to play the latest with me, I got no takers except Jarrod.

By the latest do you mean Ridge Racer Unbounded? That was garbage.

And if you mean FlatOut 3, that game is really, truly garbage made by a different company.

I certainly don't remember anybody having a thread about FlatOut around here, as I would definitely have been jumping into it. Unless it's in the Multiplayer forums, which I never go in to.

    This one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FlatOut:_Ultimate_Carnage

which was the same company. I bought it at launch, tried for months to get people to play it, then gave up and traded it in.

If it's a thread to get people to play a multiplayer game with you, of course I put it in the multiplayer forums, that was the point of the forum.

Yeah, I guess that's the difference. I looked in our two F:UC threads (one here and here) and I see one post from you and one pre-release post from Jarrod. I can't even find a thread about it in the Multiplayer forums. I had no idea you guys were even interested in the game(s). :~

i didn't buy that one when it came out, as i read it wasn't too different from FlatOut 2 and was originally intended for Xbox360/PS3 (and eventually 'ported back' to Windows). i did eventually get it when it went to $2 during a Steam sale.

Yeah, Bugbear said they were 50% of their way to the top 100 after one day on Greenlight, so hopefully they can get approved by the time early access is released (assuming it is).

I find it funny that they launched the Greenlight before coming up with a real name, though. :icon_lol:

I thought it was in fact called 'Next Car Game'. even the website says:

    It’s called Next Car Game.

This is what they said on their Twitter feed:
Before anyone asks: the #nextcargame logo on Greenlight is not final nor does it mean the name is final. Just needed something!

Pretty sure they've said in their press releases that it's just a temp name as well. That's not to say they don't just use that name long enough that it ends up sticking. :P

Apparently they're also up to 74% of the way to the Greenlight top 100. Not a final goal, but at least it's something.

I guess their Greenlight campaign is moving along. In typical understated form:

We are currently #59 of 1,382 games in Greenlight. So it's going rather well.

Nothing like responding to myself. :P Bugbear has just posted this new video showing testing crashing (and mangling) cars.

They also said they're #26 on Greenlight so have been making steady progress there in a week.

damn, maybe they can leave the manglers in the game :D
