  1. System Mechanic 9.5

    by Chuck Greer

If there is one major downside to PC Gaming, it is keeping your computer in tip top shape. Between all the loading and unloading of files, downloading programs, and software just not acting right, we are in a constant battle to keep our PC's free of problems. Over the years MANY software companies have released programs to “repair and or speed up” system problems, and while a few of these have had some minor success with some of the issues, none have came close to being that all around solution to PC users headaches. Enter System Mechanic.

Now first off let me just make this statement: System Mechanic really doesn't do anything that an advanced PC user cannot do themselves. Defrag hard drive, spyware, registry issues, memory leaks, background programs, system clutter...I could go on and on. But in order to do it yourself you will need probably 15 different programs (at least) and hours of valuable time. System Mechanic combines all the separate programs into one and takes PC maintenance to the next step by making it so unbelievably user friendly that well, even I could do it.

Lets start out with the interface. The first time System Mechanic is run it opens up to a System status window (or as iolo technologies calls it, "Dashboard View") There it has rotary dials showing you the overall status of the PC, along with general health and security. There you just click one button do do a system scan and just a bit later you can see the issues slowing down the system. And here is where I think that SM9.5 really shines above other software. You can see all the problems that were found, along with detailed information as to what each problem is. You can then choose for yourself what you wish to do with it.
Never have I had all my PC issues laid out and explained to me before repair. So gone are the days that self inflicted repairs crash your system. The level of customization available here is very nicely done. Here are but a few of the problems that SM9.5 addresses..

      Registry errors and fragmentation

      Unnecessary startup programs

      Dangerous startup programs

      Hard drive errors and fragmentation

      Excessive system clutter

      Broken shortcuts

      Unoptimized internet speed settings

      Security vulnerabilities

      Antivirus and firewall issues

      Old or missing registry backups

System Mechanic 9.5 not only scans and repairs issues when prompted, but also runs in the background and stops issues before they start. The great thing about this is that you don't know its even running until it starts a scan and even then there is no slowdown. But even that can be changed or turned off in the settings.

I can say with complete confidence that this program did repair and speed up my system in every way that they said it would. Did it live up to its speed claims? That depends on the system its being ran on. The ONLY issue I had was that it was sometimes too thorough and some of my browser security settings got reset. But once again, if I had read through the explanations of what was being repaired I could have avoided even that issue.

I used SM9.5 on both a Vista system and now I am running it on a Windows 7 system with no problems whatsoever. The best thing I can say about System Mechanic 9.5 is that I will never go without the program again. Is it worth the price? Absolutely.
